Aldro T. Hibbard — Cape Ann Artist and American Impressionist
Aldro T. Hibbard (1886–1972)
Gallery Montanaro proudly offers original paintings by Aldro T. Hibbard, a leading figure of the Cape Ann School of American Impressionism. Best known for his masterful winter scenes of Vermont and coastal landscapes of Rockport, Massachusetts, Hibbard helped define the Rockport School and shaped the direction of early 20th-century American Impressionism in New England.
Born in Falmouth, Massachusetts, Aldro T. Hibbard studied at the Massachusetts Normal Art School (now Massachusetts College of Art and Design) and at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, under Joseph DeCamp and Edmund Tarbell. Following a European tour from 1913–1914, Hibbard earned critical acclaim in Boston exhibitions, establishing himself as one of the most admired American landscape painters of his generation.
Each winter, Hibbard painted snow-covered Vermont scenes, especially around Jamaica, capturing the essence of logging, sugaring, and rural life through bold brushwork and crisp northern light. Summers were spent in Rockport, where he founded the Hibbard School of Painting and served as president of the Rockport Art Association for more than two decades. His influence made Cape Ann a major center for plein air painting and American Impressionist art.
Hibbard’s enduring legacy extends to artists such as Emile Gruppe, Paul Strisik, Marguerite Pearson, and Roger Curtis, many of whom studied or painted alongside him. Today, his work remains highly sought-after by collectors worldwide. Gallery Montanaro specializes in Aldro T. Hibbard paintings for sale, offering carefully curated examples of his most iconic Vermont snow scenes and Rockport harbor views. His art is represented in major museum collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Currier Museum of Art, Portland Museum of Art, and the Whistler House Museum of Art, as well as in significant private and corporate collections.
