Biography

Charles Movalli was a prominent American Impressionist painter, author, teacher, and juror, best known for his bold brushwork, insightful art writing, and lasting influence on the Cape Ann art community. A longtime resident of Gloucester, Massachusetts, Movalli played a key role in bridging the gap between traditional realism and modernist painting.

He earned a BA from Clark University and a PhD from the University of Connecticut, and for over 30 years, Movalli painted, wrote, lectured, and taught throughout the United States and abroad. He was a respected member of the North Shore Arts Association, Rockport Art Association, The Guild of Boston Artists, Academic Artists Association, Hudson Valley Art Association, and the New England Watercolor Society.

Although he worked primarily in acrylic, Movalli was a Signature Member of the Oil Painters of America and received numerous honors, including Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Oil Painters of America (1991), Rockport Art Association (1999), and Hudson Valley Art Association (2002).

Movalli was an in-demand national art juror, having judged exhibitions across the United States, and gave painting demonstrations and lectures for over 100 art organizations. He led workshops in 24 states as well as Bermuda, Mexico, Canada, England, France, and Switzerland. His writings on art were widely published, making him a leading voice in American art education. He is listed in Who's Who in American Art.
